Back Posting!

Okay guys, sorry about this but I am going to do some back posting about the past week!

Wednesday 2/9- We had a pretty laid back day. I don’t really recall doing much of anything that day.  It was nice to just not have to go anywhere or do anything to crazy.

Thursday 2/10- Today was a lot of fun. Becca, Bridget, Sara, Kristen, Chelsea and I all went down to the Boardwalk. The Boardwalk is this entertainment area with tons of little shops, restaurants, a casino and a theater. It is a pretty long walk (about 45 minutes to an hour) from Annie’s Cove but we walked most of it along the ocean so it was okay. It was one of the coolest and windiest days that we have had so far. Once we got to the Boardwalk (after stopping to take some pictures!) we went and got ice cream. Well, they got ice cream and I got a fruit slushy thing. I don’t particularly like the dairy products here so I opted not to take my chances again. After that we went into a bookstore because I already finished the one I bought in the airport. I got one about the FLDS cult. I am actually very excited to start reading it! After the bookstore we went into this other shopping area. It is really open kind of like a market but it is inside. They had tons of African art and some really cool things. I definitely will be going back to buy more but decided not to today since we have the next five months to come back. In the shopping area there were some African drums and a couple of guys offered to give us some “lessons”. At first we were nervous we were going to have to pay but we sat down anyway. The guys taught us a little about the drums and how to play them. They also taught us some basic rhythms that we attempted to play. It was obvious that none of us really had that great of an African beat! The guys who were teaching us were really nice and they were amazing at playing the drums. It was fun. After the drums we ran into a guy from Germany who has been coming to South Africa for the past 12 years. He talked to us about his volunteer project and the fact that he knew people that could take us into a township if we wanted. He was really nice and interesting to talk to. We walked around the shops a little more and then got in contact with the guys. They had been renting a car so we could go on our big weekend trip. We met them at this little KFC outside area. They had rented a pretty awesome Volkswagen in McDonalds but we still needed another car for the trip. So Patrick, Scott, Sara, Chelsea and Kristen all went to the airport to try and get another car. Shawn, Becca, Bridget and I stopped at the Pick-n-Pay to get some groceries. We thought that someone was going to pick us up but that didn’t happen! We waited for about an hour and then decided to take the minibus home.  The other car that we rented is quite a bit newer but also cost a little bit more. Once we got home Shawn and I made some yummy supper and just hung out. We started packing for our trip in the morning….
